Transformative Agreements / Read and Publish

The UNIZULU Library through SANLIC, has signed Transformative Agreements with a number of Publishers that will broaden access to UNIZULU scholarly publishing. Under the agreements, the publishers will make newly published articles by UNIZULU authors freely available (if the author chooses to publish as Open Access) to readers under an Open Access model.

TRANSFORMATIVE AGREEMENTS

What is a Transformative Agreement?

A transformative agreement (also called Read and Publish agreement) is a way for institutions to maintain access to scholarly content available only through subscription, while supporting the transition to open access publishing by their affiliated researchers. Institutions are, in effect, redirecting their expenditures on subscriptions to cover the open access article processing charges.  In a Read and Publish agreement the publisher receives payment for reading and payment for publishing bundled into the same contract. This bundling brings payment for publishing into a contractual arrangement rather than being addressed by each individual author who is choosing to publish open access. These agreements redirect funds previously spent on a subscription cost to a publishing cost.

Transformative Agreements

How do we benefit on these agreements as UNIZULU researchers?

The Library has currently arranged the following deals that allow for Open Access publishing at no additional cost to authors. The article processing charges (APC) are covered for researchers who choose to publish in Open Access journals with publishers that have an agreement with the UNIZULU Library.  When submitting articles to the publishers, UNIZULU researchers are required to use their UNIZULU email address to confirm their affiliation.

These deals below are open to all University of Zululand corresponding authors regardless of funding status unless otherwise specified in the description.

Cambridge University Press (2021 - 2024) Springer Nature (2023 - 2025)
Emerald Publishers (2022 - 2024) Oxford  Academic  (2023 - 2025)
Wiley Publishers  (2022 - 2025) Royal Society of Chemistry (2024 - 2027)
SCOAP3 (2022 - 2024)

Transformative Agreements Licenses

Principles of transformative agreements usually include items related to copyright ownership and transparency:

  • Copyright tends to be retained by the author and not transferred to the publisher. Many times, the publisher will require that the author(s) apply a Creative Commons license to the published article.
  • Transparency is a characteristic of a transformative agreement and such agreements are typically made publicly available.
