Library Orientaion

Library Orientation is compulsory for all first-year students at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU). It is designed to equip students with the essential knowledge and skills to make the most of the library’s resources throughout your academic journey.

The session lasts approximately one hour and includes:

  • A 15-minute presentation introducing key library services, resources, and policies.
  • A hands-on session where students learn how to use the PRIMO catalogue to search for books, articles, and other academic materials.

Library Workshops

To support the University of Zululand’s core functions of teaching, learning, and research, the library offers a series of targeted workshops designed for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. These workshops aim to enhance students’ academic success by equipping them with essential information literacy and research skills.

The sessions cover a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:

Library Workshops to support Teaching & Learning:

Workshop 1:

  • Know your library: an overview of Library services/resources/facilities for students & academics.

This workshop provides introduction to UNIZULU Library services, facilities and resources.  It includes a practical session on finding information in the library by searching e-Catalogue.

Workshop 2:

  • Stay Away From Plagiarism!: types of plagiarism and what you need to know to avoid it.

This workshop helps students to understand plagiarism and educates them how to prevent it (includes presentation, demonstration & practical training).

Workshop 3:

  • Turnitin: Plagiarism checker

This workshop helps students to understand what is Turnitin and how it can be used to prevent plagiarism (presentation, demonstration & practical training).

Workshop 4:

  • How to use e-books

Student learn how to search and use electronic books available @ UNIZULU Library (including e-books, online dictionaries and encyclopaedias)

Workshop 5:

  • e-Resources, tips for searching and more!

This workshop provides a practical session on PRIMO and other databases subscribed to by UNIZULU Library (Ebsco host, Science Direct, Web of Science, etc.), search technique, alerts, etc.

Workshop 6:

  • Referencing made easy with Endnote

Students learn referencing by using Endnote

  • SA databases (SA e-publications, Current & completed projects – NRF, etc.)
  • Inter-Library Loans (ILL)

 Recommended to PG students, supervisors and researchers.

Recommended to senior PG students, their supervisors and researchers.

The topics could be grouped together to suit specific needs and the new areas could be added on request.
